EU closes in on contract law for consumers and SMEs

A common European contract law came one step closer to reality last week after MEPs backed proposals by the European Commission to establish an optional EU-wide system. But consumer groups warned that such a scheme would do little to boost cross-border trade and only add to the confusion faced by businesses and shoppers alike.

Introducing an EU contract law and a possible civil code is an ambitious long-term goal for supporters of closer European integration, as it is expected to make the EU's single market genuinely borderless, reports EurActiv.

Appliance recycling firm fined after worker injured

A worker was injured by a falling stack of cookers and washing machines at one of the UK's largest electrical equipment recycle firms.

Environcom England recycles waste electrical equipment for some of the biggest electrical retailers in the country, but Grantham Magistrates' Court heard how a Polish agency worker suffered bruising to his back and chest after an unsafe stack of appliances fell on him.

Next generation of home-grown talent nurtured with student design competition

* CP-Group-students.jpgTile manufacturer and distributor, the CP Group, has been searching for the next generation of home-grown talent recently, undertaking a student design project in collaboration with the University of Huddersfield.

In a bid to discover new talent and further relationships with the University, a six week design project was launched for 29 first year students all studying a BA (Hons) in Surface Design for Fashion and Interiors. Students were introduced to the latest trends in interior design, developments in tile manufacturing and given a personal insight into the CP Group's innovative production techniques before being invited to put forward a new tile design at the company's Head Office.
