Furniture retail quality group publishes Flammability Best Practice Guide
The Furniture Industry Research Association has announced the publication of a new best practice guide for flammability testing of upholstery on behalf of the Furniture Retail Quality Group, the technical committee representing all major UK furniture retailers.
The new guide - FIRA-FRQG F001: 2011 - has been developed by FRQG to fulfil four major functions:
- To provide basic information to upholstery suppliers across the global supply chain regarding the requirements of the UK's Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations
- To give a standard interpretation of the testing requirements within the regulations to ensure that all test laboratories around the world are testing in the same way, and hopefully reduce expensive product recalls
- To give instructions to test laboratories on test report format to ensure that they are easy to read
- To give advice on the age of test reports that will be accepted
The aim of the guide is to ensure that all suppliers understand their obligations, and that all test laboratories test and report in a harmonised way.
The FRQG comprises representatives from the following retailers: Anglia Home Furnishings, Asda Stores, B&Q, Dwell Retail, Home Retail Group, House Of Fraser, John Lewis Department Stores, Laura Ashley, Marks & Spencer, Matalan Retail, Mamas & Papas, Mothercare UK, Next Retail, Poundstretcher Retail, Shop Direct, Sainsbury's Supermarkets, Tesco Stores, The White Company, Toys R Us and Wilkinson Hardware Stores.
