Maximising design potential with Mistral
Mistral 25mm solid surfacing from Karonia lends itself to a whole host of creative applications in the kitchen. Here, it offers an imaginative and practical solution to creating a custom-built island unit as well as providing a sophisticated, durable and easy care material for worksurfaces, upstands and splashbacks.
A contemporary take on a classic black and white theme, the resulting kitchen has a custom-built island unit as the focal point, providing a bespoke combination of additional preparation space, useful cabinet storage and an informal eating area.
The solid nature of Mistral means that it is easy to work with and joints are visually inconspicuous, so any size and shape is possible. Here, the worksurface is shaped so that the breakfast bar is significantly wider to form a spacious eating space while the other end is narrower to ensure there is plenty of space between it and the kitchen cabinets. Note how all the corners are gently rounded, a pleasing aesthetic touch that also removes potential dangers for children and adults alike.
Choosing Mistral in 12mm sheet format for the upstands and splashbacks creates a unifying design theme and also ensures an easy to clean, hygienic surface throughout.
The colour chosen is Tongaro, one of 17 options in the range and the ideal partner for the pristine white units and the slate floor. Like most Mistral designs, it combines the appealing look of natural quartz and stone with the practicality of an acrylic-based material. Although completely flush, the chip composition gives the surface an eye-catching visual depth and texture.
As the worksurface is so simple to cut, it was easy to install a pop-up socket, the perfect way to have the convenience of instantly accessible power close at hand without spoiling elegant kitchen contours with unsightly sockets.
Specifying Mistral solid surfacing for this striking new kitchen greatly extended the overall design possibilities as well as providing a practical, hardwearing and decorative worksurface. As Mistral is completely solid and a full 25mm thick, it has the necessary strength for sink applications without the need for special modules and provides an elegant frame for all types of sink. It is also possible to add practical features such as deep drainer grooves.
With Mistral the only limit is your imagination. Here, an off-cut has been turned into a useful, co-ordinating chopping board.
Mistral 25mm solid surface worktops carry a 10 year manufacturer's warranty and are available via a network of distributors listed on the website.
