HiB urges retailers to take stock of 3g living

* HiB-3g.jpgWith World Population Day taking place this week (on Tuesday 11th July), HiB has been highlighting the importance of catering to the growing trend for 3G living, especially when it comes to the bathroom.

Established in 1989, World Population Day was developed by the United Nations to raise awareness around the rapid increase in population which is being experienced globally. This year, HiB has been reminding retailers of the opportunities presented by the increase in multi-generational, or 3G, households.

Steve Kaye, marketing director at HiB, comments: "According to the Intergenerational Foundation Think Tank, over 500,000 homes have at least three generations living under one roof and that number is expected to rise to 556,000 by 2019."

"This means that bathroom design now has to factor in the needs of households which not only include a traditional nuclear family, but potentially grandparents and adult children too. With this in mind, storage is of the essence, and smart solutions which can house the belongings of an extended family without compromising on style are absolutely crucial. Tall units and two or three drawer bathroom furniture, especially those which include drawer dividers, can be the perfect option for homes such as these."

"Equally, retailers can recommend features which not only suit multi-generational homesteads, but also work as style statements in their own right. For example, deep washbasins are bang on-trend, but also make splashfree hand washing easy for elderly and very young members of the family."

"Given the ageing population and the number of graduates moving home to their parents, it seems increasingly likely that more and more properties will become multi-generational. Therefore, retailers should be mindful of the products which are best suited to these environments, not only to take advantage of a burgeoning new market, but also to provide the best possible level of choice."
