New: casual chic from burgbad
Leading German manufacturer burgbad has brought a fresh look to luxury bathrooms with the inspiring and innovative Mya range. As part of the Building Products Group of the Eczacıbaşı Group, burgbad is said to be the market leader in Germany for bathroom furniture.
Launched at the ISH show this year, and available now, Mya takes its inspiration from the wooden clothes horse of yesteryear, featuring light, open pieces in natural or dark grey matt oak veneer, themed around hanging rails and practical drawers. Matching matt basins are available in white and stunning dramatic black.
This idea was also the starting point for the name Mya, which is an acronym for 'million years ago'. The name stands for enduringness and a functional, self-contained design language that goes back to bathroom design's roots in the skilled trades and bathing culture.
The inspiration for the concept and design of Mya came from the tradition of Shaker furniture, the authentic aesthetics of which evolved from a combination of natural materials, craftsmanship and an appreciation of simplicity.
Designer Jeannette Altherr incorporated all these aspects in her second collection for the German furniture specialist. She sees the top-quality materials and tradition-inspired design of Mya as an alternative to the often-impersonal character of mass-produced cabinets - a warm kind of minimalism that is compatible with our times.
The range includes a clothes rail with a hinged full-length mirror which can be used as a room divider or screen, a large freestanding towel rail roomy enough to take the biggest of bath sheets; a tall freestanding mirror with storage bags; vanities with storage boxes that fit neatly on the shelf below the basin; basins in a choice of sizes and round wall mirrors with illuminated frames. Matching pendant ceiling LED lights complete the look.
"Mya is something genuinely different in bathroom furniture," says Margaret Talbot of burgbad.
Although it is a contemporary looking range, its inspiration harks back to the days when home owners living in homes built without a bathroom used freestanding pieces around a fixed bath and basin to create a practical environment.
Vanities are reminiscent of the Victorian wash stand but brought right up to date with sleek modern lines and freestanding storage boxes fitted with soft leather pulls. The full-length mirror and clothes rail is a brilliant idea - few bathrooms have a place for clothes on hangers - just think of the convenience if you are getting dressed to go to work or out for the evening".
Mya is available from appointed burgbad retailers across the UK.
