Kartell by Laufen presents 'Dim Sum'
At this year's London Design Festival, Laufen presents 'Dim Sum' at the Kartell flagship store in Knightsbridge. The artistic, collaborative installation between Laufen and Kartell, in the heart of the Brompton Design District, follows its debut at Milan Design Week earlier this year.
Ludovica + Roberto Palomba, the creative minds of the Kartell by Laufen project, continue their experimentation and innovation in the bathroom sector. Kartell by Laufen will be presenting an engaging, exploratory and conceptual exercise on washbasins that combines design and research, as part of this year's Festival.
It is a voyage of suggestions, in which East meets West. The box-like installation has walls in an orange hue from the palette of Le Corbusier, a tribute to the tone that best represents the birth of the Kartell by Laufen project. Research for this project took its cue from the iconic Japanese 'dim sum' tableware, leading to wash basin prototypes with very free and playful forms, utilised as imaginative place settings around a large table.
The display with the table at center stage highlights simple, traditional forms, as well as new and amusing silhouettes. The project has a conceptual approach that started with a basic idea to generate a change of increasingly considered profiles. The designers have utilized Laufen's innovative material Saphirkeramik, a high-performance ceramic that enables sanitary wear to be made with wafer thin edges, very small radii and surfaces that are extremely pleasing to touch and look at.
Starting with the colours of food and the objects that establish shared relations on the table, Ludovica + Roberto Palomba found inspiration for the design of their washbasin concept. Iconic forms that range from rounded profiles to more rigorous, squared shapes, even futuristic at times, are set apart by unexpected shades of red, green and brown, suggesting unique shadows and contrasts.
The walls of the showroom form the backdrop for captivating photographs, selected to illustrate the game of experimentation, in an ironic take on the dreamy relationship between food and the world of the bathroom, where toothbrushes become chopsticks, soap dishes become saucers, and so on.
The Kartell by Laufen installation will create a unique atmosphere where the bathroom becomes a space of expression in which every detail created by the Italian design duo Ludovica + Roberto Palomba has been carefully refined to offer thought-provoking and innovative solutions.
Kartell by Laufen's 'Dim Sum' installation can be seen at the Kartell Flagship Store, 223 Brompton Rd, London SW3 2EJ from 15th to 23rd September 2018.
