Unified Water Label can help combat climate change

* Unified-Water-Label.jpgThe Unified Water Label can make a contribution towards combating climate change, says Bathroom Manufacturers Association CEO Yvonne Orgill.

Yvonne called for the industry to support the UWL, in response to the Committee on Climate Change's 'UK housing: Fit for the future?' recently published report.

"The report clearly advocates the use of water-efficient devices with low-flow showers and taps in the bathrooms, these products are available and easily identified via the UWL," she argues.

"There are opportunities to retro-fit these water and energy saving products into existing homes as well as them being specified for new homes.

"Consumers are clearly wanting to support the government in becoming more aware of climate change and energy efficiency in the home. Our recent BMA research into buying habits found that consumers would be positively influenced to buy products if they had more information about water efficiency. The results showed that more than 80% of respondents said that water efficiency was quite or very important when purchasing a WC or a shower, yet almost 40% were not made aware of how much water the products would use.

"The bathroom industry has an opportunity to make a positive contribution to climate change by getting behind the UWL.

"Whilst it is a voluntary scheme there are currently 12,500 products and 147 brands already using it.

"The next step is to increase visibility of the label to at least 80% of taps and showers in the marketplace, thus meeting the European Commission's requirements to validate the proposal for a voluntary agreement, which would be a huge step forward."
