No frosty reception for Polypipe's Domus Thermal at Scottish student housing

Polypipe Ventilation's Domus rigid duct and Domus Thermal duct insulation systems have been installed into a large new student accommodation development in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh.

iQ Fountainbridge features a range of modern bedrooms and studios, each with an en-suite shower room. The shower rooms are actually pods, manufactured off site, connected to external walls on site by MacDonald Ventilation using Domus Supertube 204x60mm ducting and insulated with Domus Thermal duct insulation. 730 shower pods, as well as all the kitchen cooker hoods, have now been fitted in this manner.

This is the first time MacDonald Ventilation has used Polypipe's Domus Thermal system and found it to be very simple to install, as Paul Kilgour, Contracts Manager of MacDonald Ventilation, explains: "The Domus insulation product was used for the acoustic and thermal properties it possesses. We found that the product, while light in weight, had a sturdiness to it that fitted in with being on a building site; this lightweight factor also helped with the logistics of getting the material to various areas of the workplaces.

"The application of the insulation to the ducting was very simple to do and the time factor to apply was pretty insignificant in timescale. We also like the finish of the product which was pleasing to the eye for us and the client."

Domus Thermal is a uniquely engineered, patent pending duct insulation system for Domus round and rectangular duct systems, designed to comply with 2010 Building Regulations. Manufactured from silver EPS (expanded polystyrene), incorporating carbon particles to further improve performance, Domus Thermal has high insulative properties yet remains a cost-effective and simple solution to prevent the formation of condensation.

The range is comprehensive and includes both lengths and fittings.

All Domus Thermal products consist of two identical moulded halves that fit snugly around the ducting and simply lock into place using a moulded interlocking feature. This gripping interlock means that the pieces stay together without the need for taping or gluing joints, significantly reducing installation time. The straight length sections are also moulded with a cutting guide every 10mm for added simplicity.

Such a design not only makes for quick and simple installation but also looks highly professional, giving added reassurance to the customer.
