UK 'a nation of water wasters'

New research out today by leading bathroom manufacturer Ideal Standard reveals there is a lack of awareness when it comes to our water usage. Whilst many homeowners want to limit their water use, many are unaware of how much water they use and waste on a daily basis.

Over half of people use double the amount of water they think they use, according to the latest figures from the water usage survey. Over 80% of people believe they consume less than 90 litres of water per day, yet each person in the UK uses an average of 150 litres of water a day.

Ideal Standard's survey reveals that while 70% of consumers are interested in reducing the amount of water used in their home, over half of people are not prepared to put their money where their mouth is and do anything about it. The survey also exposes that the majority of people (60%) do not currently have any water saving products, such as dual flush toilets, click technology taps or water saving baths, installed in their bathroom.

When questioned, however, two thirds of people said they would consider installing water saving products in the knowledge that they would save them money on their water bills.

Tony Rheinberg, Marketing Manager at Ideal Standard says: "Research shows that London is drier than Istanbul and that the South East of England has less water available per person than the Sudan and Syria.

"Our national water usage survey highlights the lack of awareness around sustainable water usage in the UK and the fact that there are plenty of options for the bathroom out there which will help people to save water and money at the same time."

Ideal Standard has more than 300 products registered on the Bathroom Manufacturer Association's water efficient labelling scheme. The company has pledged to add 100 more products to the water efficient labelling scheme by summer next year.

Ideal Standard manufactures a broad range of water saving products including Click technology taps which can save over 5,000 litres of water per year in an average bathroom and help limit the flow of water to 50% of a tap's normal capacity. The company's Concept water saving bath is designed with less space at the foot end of the bath to reduce water wastage. This bath has a capacity of 116 litres which compares with an average bath of 190 litres.
