New safety initiative launching next month

On 4th November 2014, AMDEA, the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances, will be hosting a reception to introduce stakeholders to 'Register my appliance', the new industry safety initiative aimed at encouraging the public to register their appliances.

There are at least 100 million large appliances in use in UK homes. In some cases the average lifespan is over a decade. In the rare instances that a fault appears in a particular batch, a simple in-home fix can normally banish the risk. Yet, unlike cars, there is little traceability and the challenge facing manufacturers is identifying owners to send in a qualified technician.

Improving ownership data has been recognised as a critical step to advance the recall process and once the scheme is up and running, consumers will have a quick and secure route to register over 47 leading brands of both their new and older appliances, on AMDEA's new website.

AMDEA is also preparing an ongoing programme to encourage the public to take this step, with a consumer press launch scheduled for mid-January. Both the Government and AMDEA members hope that all involved in the domestic appliance supply chain will recognise the wisdom of promoting 'Register my appliance.'
