Individual Vehicle Approval for lorries: 'help to get a pass'

* iva-lights.jpgThe Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency has just updated its 'help to get a pass' guide.

This guide tells you how to avoid the top 10 reasons that lorries and other heavy goods vehicles fail the IVA inspection, with clear illustrations on the correct and incorrect way of doing things.

"These guides focus on the most common reasons for failure that we see when vehicles are presented for an IVA test," explains Gordon Thomson, head of vehicle testing policy.

"We hope that by making use of our IVA 'help to get a pass' guide, you will be able to avoid these reasons for failure and the first-time pass rate will improve."

The top 10 reasons for failure are:

1. Lateral protection (side guards)
2. Headlamp aim
3. Retro Reflectors
4. General construction
5. Statutory plates and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
6. End outline, side, stop & side marker lamps
7. Spray Suppression
8. Fuel tanks and Rear Under run Protective Devices (RUPD)
9. Installation of lights
10. Exterior projections of cabs, see the guide at:
