Ellis Furniture supports Cancer Research UK
As part of its ongoing commitment to support the charity Cancer Research UK, British manufacturer Ellis Furniture is donating £30,000 during the next three years to continue its funding of work carried out by Cancer Research UK Leeds Centre, taking the total amount pledged over the years by generations of the Ellis family to more than £100,000.
The new commitment is being used to fund PhD student Anastasia Filia's research of melanoma, bowel and testicular cancers in order to identify new ways to diagnose and treat the disease. Her specific research objective is to analyse melanoma tumours and develop a new technique to extract DNA for genetic testing.
In recognition of what the cancer charity is calling 'an exceptional achievement', members of the Ellis family, including current directors Tom Ellis and Richard Ellis, will attend a Cancer Research UK event later this year where the donations will be publicly acknowledged.
"Supporting important charitable work is something our family started many years ago and it's something that remains close to our hearts," explains Richard.
"With so many worthy causes out there it can be difficult to choose between them. We chose to support Leeds Cancer Research UK as it's in our local region and because of the invaluable role the charity plays in funding research into cancer, which is unfortunately a widespread disease. According to the statistics, more than one in three people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime and there are more than 200 different types of the disease. They're very high figures.
"Cancer Research UK funds more than 4,000 scientists, doctors and researchers who find ways to diagnose, prevent and treat cancer. That's extremely important work."
Tom: "As a family owned business with 200 employees we appreciate the importance of our team, our local community and wider society and that's why it's very important to us that we give something back. One way in which we do this is via direct donations to our local Leeds Cancer Research UK branch.
"We also encourage Ellis Furniture employees to organise their own fundraising events for various local charities and this is something they do regularly, with great gusto and some fantastic results.
"We also support local colleges offering apprenticeships as we believe it's important to keep the traditional craftsmanship skills alive.
"All this is not something we talk about very often though. It's just a natural part of what we're about. We just get on and do it and feel very honoured that we're in a position to be able to make a contribution."
