Renolit Cramlington employee carries Olympic Torch

* Renolit-Olympic-torch-bearer.jpgNeil Douglass, Financial Controller for Renolit Cramlington, was honoured for his charity works by becoming one of the Olympic Torchbearers ahead of this year's London 2012 Olympics.

Nominated by someone they know - in Neil's case his sister - 8,000 inspirational people carried the Olympic Flame as it journeyed across the UK.

The Olympic Flame stands for peace, unity and friendship.

In October 2010 Neil's world was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia. CML is an extremely rare type of blood cancer and had it gone undetected, Neil could have been dead within three years.

In the short time Neil has been living with this disease he has been raising money for a charity which is trying to find a cure. Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research offers patients like him hope for the future, hope for a cure and support in the meantime.

Neil has raised nearly £10,000 since his diagnosis by taking part in the Coast 2 Coast Cycle Challenge, completing his 8th Great North Run and organising a charity games night which brought in more than £3,000.

"I was originally nominated in June 2011, and never thought I would actually be chosen," says Neil. "I found out in March 2012 that I had been selected and had passed all the security checks. Only then did I start to realise just how important it would be to carry the Olympic Torch.

"The anticipation built as June 15th approached and the day itself was amazing! Thousands of people lined the streets and cheered me along my stretch of road in North Shields, Tyne & Wear.

"It is an experience I am very lucky to have had and one I will never forget it. Carrying the Flame was an incredible honour, only made possible by the support that friends, family, colleagues and Renolit have shown in supporting my charity fundraising for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research."
