Welcome to the
What should I find in my inbox this week but a press release entitled ‘How safe is your house insurance?’! The writers must have thought all their Christmases had come at once as the flooding in the South-West will have guaranteed that every journalist with the slightest involvement in housing, restoration and refurbishment, will have opened it up and read it! I had already been discussing the issue of insurance with some friends who have a house in St Austell (which was one of the towns most seriously damaged) who happened to be spending the week in Surrey. We couldn’t quite work out whether it would be less stressful for them to remain up here or whether they might be relieved to return home and find that things weren’t quite as bad as expected... Some years ago I spent a few days with some flood restoration professionals and insurance assessors, when Lewes was badly flooded. It was a real eye-opener as what you see of the clean-up on television really only scratches the surface – and there is the real nightmare of finding that your neighbour’s insurers handle things in a completely different way from yours and that while they seem to be looked after very well, you realise you’ve drawn the short straw when it comes to choosing your provider. And although all this extra business which is soon to come is great news for those in our industry who will get to manufacture, supply and install all these new kitchens and downstairs bathrooms – as well as the Government, as VAT will have risen by the time most householders will be in a position to have new products installed – my heart goes out to those whose homes have been ruined. Back to the press release... more Yours,Jan Hobbs
This Week's News
Night Black laminate slate from Faus Romantic, handsome, intriguing... these are the emotions engendered by one of the latest laminate flooring designs from world leaders Faus - its Night Black Slate. Night back Slate is one of a number of new laminate floor designs that faithfully replicate the richness of natural stone and the elegance of ceramic and marble tiling both visually and from a tactile dimension. This is what Faus calls 'Realfeel'. Croydex taps into the beauty of wood Croydex is excited to launch its brand new Kingston range, a stunning collection of bathroom accessories made from natural wood. Accessories in the Kingston range have been carefully crafted from solid oak, a warm and richly textured wood that adds instant character to the bathroom. Combined with elements of glass, chrome and ceramic, the range is a simple but striking fusion of materials that works in both classic and contemporary bathrooms. Why relaxing in a VitrA bath is also peace of mind What do people consider when buying a bath? Shape, size, maybe colour... but not much else. They wouldn't normally ever think about the bath's construction and how that will affect the eventual comfort and pleasure in use. Leading international bathroom products manufacturer VitrA make a huge range of acrylic baths but each differs from other bath makes in a number of important ways.
Freezing freshly cooked food for re-heating at a later date is a great time-saver and food lasts up to five times longer when vacuum packed, as well as freeing up extra space in the freezer. Baumatic's Vacuum Packer is easy to use, simply place a plastic bag in the chamber, close the door and press start. The appliance will then remove the air from the bag, seal it and return the atmosphere within the unit back to normal, ready for freezing. If you come across a leak around a bath or shower, perhaps caused by shrinkage or settlement, it can be difficult and costly to fix. But all that disruption is now a thing of the past since D R Services (London) has it taped! The company's DR-y Seal is simplicity itself to apply. Simply peel back the paper on the inside of the tape (100mm at a time) and then apply to a clean and dry surface. Being a tape it wraps around corners perfectly and since there is no cure time, tiling can begin as soon as you have it taped and the tape is invisible in the finished installation. Have you seen 'Britain's Ugliest Bathroom'?
