Welcome to the

KBzine

I’m sure I’m not the only one that suffered another sleepless night, before logging onto/switching on the news this morning with real trepidation… Would a huge swathe of these beautiful islands no longer be part of the United Kingdom?

I thank those living in Scotland for voting the way I’d have liked to, given the chance.

Much of the press is today saying that the referendum showed democracy at its best. I hate to whinge, but bearing in mind the impact a ‘yes’ vote would have had on everyone in the UK, shouldn’t we all have been given the vote?

In other news today, Triton’s Lorna Fellowes, has criticised the revised consumer rights bill, arguing that the decision to introduce a 30 day short term right for consumers to reject goods they deem to be substandard, is a bad one for the industry. I couldn’t agree more.

I do sometimes wonder whether that other bastion of democracy, the European Union, is – instead of supporting business – trying to make things as difficult as possible for businesses to thrive.

What do you think?

Ceramic tiles market strengthens in 2014

* ceramic-tiles-market.jpgFindings from a new report on the ceramic tiles market by MTW Research indicates that the market is now experiencing above inflation growth for the first time since 2007, with tile sales set to grow by more than £15 million in 2014.

Boosted by rising domestic sales coupled with a strengthening of demand in several key commercial sectors, prospects for the UK tiles market appear increasingly positive in 2014 according to MTW. The recent rise in the number of domestic property transactions coupled with a buoyant housebuilding market is underpinning volume growth, with a number of key consumer trends now offering added value growth.

Soapbox: "Beggar Brussels!"

* robin-chater.jpgwrites Robin Chater, Secretary-General of the Federation of International Employers

"Europe is failing its next generation because neither the European Union, nor national governments are able to tackle over-regulation and the grey economy.

As delegates gather next week at a Brussels conference convened by the European Commission to consider 'Labour economics after the crisis', Manuel will still be sitting with his unemployed friends making a coffee last all morning in a crowded McDonald's in Zaragoza. He is just one of the 56% of 15-24 year olds in Spain who are still without work... The victim of a downturn that never went away and a system of employment laws that discourage employers from generating permanent job opportunities.
