Around three years ago I was having trouble with a builder who was due to fix a couple of cisterns (you may remember, the one who instead of fixing the cisterns, painted my already newly-painted 'Contemporary' dining room wall and my equally neutral, newly-painted kitchen, bright yellow, in my absence and without my say-so). For some reason I was never able to establish, he also delivered two new toilets (minus seats and lids) to my front door. They remained in my porch for some days, before I removed them while cleaning, onto my drive in the vain hope that he'd collect them. They were too heavy for me to be able to lift into my car, so there they stayed. Eventually I filled them with compost and planted Spring bulbs, Summer flowering climbers and Fuschias whose colourful blooms last until the first frosts. As well as being easy to keep moist thanks to the reservoir in the u-bend, they make a cheery display and a great talking point when visitors see them for the first time. The white ceramic also works as a useful marker when I'm reversing into the drive after dark!
It was with much delight that I opened up a press release from Hull-based Ideal Standard's press relations guru Corey Kitchener today, with pictures showing how men's urinals have been turned into art for the new Hull Capital of Culture exhibition - a collaboration between Ideal Standard, which owns the famous Armitage Shanks brand; and the Hull School of Art and Design. Having looked at how some of the urinals have been decorated, I can see I'm in good company in making use of superfluous sanitaryware and I'm wondering whether there would be any call for a permanent exhibition... a Salvador Dali-esque village of sanitaryware - painted, decorated and placed exactly where you wouldn't expect to find it... Yours,

NHBC's top tips for preventing trips and falls on site Every year several thousand construction workers are injured following a trip or slip whilst working on a building site. According to the Health & Safety Executive, around 1,000 of these injuries involve fractured bones or dislocated joints. Through effective management of working areas and access routes some of these could be avoided; the industry loses more time to relatively minor slips, trips and falls than to any other cause. NHBC, the leading provider of health & safety services to the home building industry and the organiser of the UK's only industry health & safety awards scheme, recommends the following top tips to help identify some of the more common risk factors and how to avoid them for a safer site: New and improved hot water tank from InSinkErator InSinkErator has introduced the NeoTank, a new and improved hot water tank for the company's full range of steaming hot water taps. Modelled on the previous hot water tank, the innovative NeoTank features a precise and adjustable thermostat, enabling users to set the desired temperature of the water between 88 and 98°C. The compact 2.5 litre tank takes up only a small amount of valuable, under-the-sink, cupboard space and the enhanced internal and external design ensures a quiet operation and increased product longevity. How Britain's foremost river rescuer is helping construction companies One of Britain's most renowned river experts is training construction workers along the Thames in London to help combat health & safety issues. Ant Eddies-Davies, who runs Live the Adventure in Shropshire, has been tapped up for his rescue skills having previously trained everyone from international defence forces to emergency services in how to stay safe on the water. With so much building work taking place alongside one of London's prime access routes, this particular project will see Ant giving vital training to some of Britain's leading construction firms on projects around the capital's leading building ventures.
