Welcome to the Regular readers of KBZine will be aware that I was a strong advocate of our need to cut the amount of waste we send to landfill, long before the EU set the ever tightening targets we now have to meet. Although my local council operates a good doorstep collection scheme for recyclables, it doesn’t take items such as aluminium foil, paint tins, builders’ rubble, broken computers etc., but these – or bits of them – can be used in the manufacture of other products. Householders are encouraged to take them to the local waste transfer station where they are separated into different skips for collection by companies prepared to pay for them. It’s a pain to take everything there but it cuts local taxes and it’s good to know I’m doing my bit, so I do. Yours, Jan Hobbs
